This video addresses common questions about solo travel as a Black woman in my 20s. From choosing destinations to capturing memories during solo travel adventures, I share personal experiences and practical tips for fellow aspiring solo travelers.

Choosing Your Destination:

My approach to selecting a solo travel destination involves careful research. I consider factors like cultural alignment, government stability, and personal safety. I also research the cost of living, accessibility, and potential tourist seasons to avoid inflated prices.

Capturing Your Travels:

For those wondering how I capture my solo travel photos, I rely heavily on my trusty tripod. This affordable and versatile tool allows me to achieve stable shots and experiment with different angles. I also don’t shy away from asking friendly-looking strangers to take photos, always prioritizing safety and choosing individuals who appear to be traveling with family or in groups.

Solo Travel vs. Group Travel:

While group travel can be fun, I personally prefer solo travel. It allows for greater independence, eliminates the stress of coordinating with others, and fosters self-discovery. Don’t be fooled though, I have done groups trip, check out my “8-Day Girls Trip Greece: An Unforgettable Journey Through Athens, Santorini, and Mykonos” article.

Making Friends While Traveling:

Connecting with other travelers is easier than you might think. Platforms like Clubhouse and Miss Travel can help you connect with fellow solo travel enthusiasts in your destination. I also recommend joining Facebook groups for solo female travelers and conducting thorough background checks before meeting up with anyone in person.

My Journey:

My solo travel journey began with a spontaneous trip to Bali, Indonesia, during my college spring break. Overwhelmed by academic and social pressures, I craved an escape and decided to take the leap. This impulsive decision, while initially met with apprehension from my family, proved to be incredibly rewarding.

Finding Things to Do:

Research is key! I utilize various platforms like YouTube, Pinterest, and Clubhouse to discover hidden gems and local recommendations. I also compile itineraries and create detailed Google Docs to organize my plans based on location and proximity to my accommodation.

Safety Concerns:

While generally safe, I encountered a minor safety concern during my trip to Bali. While navigating a poorly lit backroad on my rented motorcycle, I found myself in a dead-end with no streetlights. This experience highlighted the importance of situational awareness and the need for extra precautions when traveling alone at night.

Finding Cute Travel Spots:

Instagram is a treasure trove of travel inspiration! I explore travel influencer pages and hashtags to discover hidden gems and aesthetically pleasing locations.

Family Support:

My family initially expressed concerns about my solo travel to Bali, particularly my mother. However, I believe it’s crucial to prioritize your own well-being and travel goals while respecting your family’s concerns.

Budgeting for Your Trip:

I typically plan my trips several months in advance, allowing me to save diligently. I utilize travel booking platforms like Expedia and Skyscanner to compare prices and find the best deals on flights and accommodations. I also factor in potential unexpected expenses and create a realistic budget for my entire trip.

Financial Limitations:

For those facing financial constraints, consider work exchange programs. Many hostels and guesthouses offer accommodation in exchange for work, providing an affordable and immersive travel experience.

Finding Good Ticket Sales:

Early bird gets the worm ! Booking flights well in advance, often several months or even a year in advance, can significantly reduce costs. I also recommend being flexible with your travel dates to potentially find even better deals.

I hope this provides valuable insights and encourages you to embark on your own travel adventures. Remember to prioritize your safety, conduct thorough research, and embrace the transformative power of independent travel.
