“Yes, I do.” she states. “Okay great, thanks for that!” I say quickly and awkwardly, “I am looking for tooth paste, what aisle might it be on?” I ask
“It’s on the second floor, aisle 8.” she says
“Oh great, thank you so much!” I reply back
As I make my way up the escalator, I think to myself, “Well that was easy enough, I didn’t even have to use Google translate!” as I smirk to myself – a small victory in my quest to overcome language barriers.
I go to aisle 8 and whisper to myself “Tooth paste, tooth paste, tooth paste” My eyes linger over a couple of products, all in French, and I suddenly come across the name Polident. “Wait, this name is familiar, I think it’s American,” I think to myself, unable to place where I’d seen it before. I grab it and take it back downstairs to checkout.
The total reads 5.99 Euros – a deal that I would later pay the true price for in my ongoing battle to overcome language barriers.
