When Do Tulips Bloom in Virginia?

In Virginia, tulip season typically spans spring, with blooms appearing from late March to early May. The vibrant display lasts about three weeks, though the exact timing can vary depending on the tulip variety and local weather conditions.

The Festival of Spring

Burnside Farms hosts two signature events each year: the vibrant Festival of Spring, featuring tulip-picking, and the Summer of Sunflowers. The Festival of Spring typically begins in late March and runs for about three weeks, offering a colorful celebration of blooming tulips.

Photo Op Moments

During our visit, my friend and I was charmed by the Dutch-themed elements scattered throughout the farm. Large wooden clogs and a windmill provide perfect photo opportunities, adding a touch of Netherlands authenticity to the Virginia landscape. The weekend wagon rides, at just $2 per person, were a particular favorite amongst families who had kids.

Photography enthusiasts will appreciate the farm’s picturesque setting. I recommend wearing neutral colors like gray, white, or olive green to complement the vibrant flower backgrounds. The farm is stroller-friendly, though large-wheeled strollers navigate the terrain more easily. Bringing snacks, water, and layers is advisable, as spring weather can be unpredictable. I brought my very affordable, pink Fujifilm Instax mini camera with me.

My Review

Burnside Farms exceeded my expectations. The sheer beauty of the tulip fields was breathtaking, and the family-friendly activities ensured everyone had an enjoyable time. While the ticket prices might seem steep, the experience of wandering through millions of blooming tulips, watching children play, and capturing memories makes it worth every penny. It’s a perfect weekend destination for families, photographers, and anyone looking to celebrate the arrival of spring.

Pro tip 📌: Follow the farm’s Facebook page for real-time updates on bloom conditions and plan your visit accordingly. Whether you’re a local or traveling from the D.C. area, Burnside Farms offers a slice of Dutch beauty right in the heart of Virginia.
